Why doing your best matters.
There is a myriad of reasons for choosing to do your best each day. Read on for five of these reasons and a bonus, overarching principle.
- You do not exist in isolation. Whether you are an entrepreneur, business owner or employee; your work matters to someone or something. The saying that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link illustrates the importance of not being the reason why your business or work place could crumble or implode on itself. This also applies when you work by or for yourself, such as a freelancer or self-employed writer. In the competitive marketplace, your products or books are only as good as the sum of the weakest parts. In other words, strive to be so good such that on your ‘off’ days (as we all have), your best work more than adequately compensates for your weakest output.
- Someone is watching you. Mentoring others is one of the most rewarding ways to replicate your skills and knowledge. Be so good at what you do that others pay attention to you as motivation for self-improvement. Becoming known as an expert in your field can open doors of opportunity into other income or influence streams as a teacher or trainer.
- Increase your earning potential. This builds from the previous point with the difference that, if you have no interest in becoming a trainer or knowledge expert in your field, your skills, diligence and dedication will cause those who can help take your career further to notice you.
- You’ll feel better for it. One of the most self-rewarding things is the knowledge that at the end of the day, you put in your best. Contentment is often the result of making the most of your own potential every day. You are far less likely to envy or resent the success of others when you are making the most of your time and skills.
- You’ll find your right fit quicker. The first, second, or third thing you try your hands at will not always be the best fit for you. Yes, some people find what they are good at early on and stick with it. For others, when you have done your best at something and it just doesn’t work, you’ll more quickly find the inner release and resolve to move on to that thing that brings the most internal and external rewards while making your efforts feel worth the while.
The overarching principle for putting in your best is that it is simply the right thing to do – whether you get a reward for it or not!
